Week Three of Fall Shares

Feeling ready for fall? This week is a teeny weeny bit cooler. Thank goodness for fall! If this weeks basket doesn’t make you feel like doing some fall cookin’, then I don’t know what will!

We have been harvesting our winter squash and pumpkins the last few days. As you know, each week we try to have a new winter squash in your baskets. This week is delicata winter squash. You don’t need to peel! Just wash slice and roast with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs and spices of your choice. Delicata is one of our favorites.

What’s in your basket this week? Well, we did some rooting around for it!

Week One of Fall Shares

We have begun!

Fall shares last eight weeks. We strive to have a different winter squash each week. We cure these a few weeks before putting them in your baskets so they have the highest sugar content making them richer tasting. So eat up or save for a later time in the fall.

This week is a transition week in the gardens, so this means there is some variances from basket to basket ~ not all baskets are the same. The difference is; sweet salad turnips, beets or beans. First come first serve. Also we have extra peppers and summer squash you are welcome to take from the basket as you come in the door.

Bad and sad peach crop for us this year. While we were excited for how abundant the peaches were and we provided extra care, the fruit beetles were even more excited for our labors. They devoured anything that had the slightest color. We are hoping for the later Fairtime Peaches to be successful. So needless to say, there are very few peaches in your basket this week.

If you have a need for culinary herbs, we will be happy to cut what you need for your weeks meal prep. Just let us know, and we’ll happily gather it up for you when you arrive (providing it is growing).

This weeks baskets~

Peaches (few)

Asian pears

Apples

Bay leaves (can be dried for later soups and dishes)

Butternut squash

Kale

Bell peppers

Anaheim peppers

Walla Walla onion

Eggplant

Beans, beets, or hakurei turnip

Plus extras of your choice

Week Nine of Summer Shares

Summer shares are almost to a close. One more week to go after this weeks share, ending on August 9th. We take a two week break, giving us time to regroup and begin Fall Shares August 30th.

Every year we have something that challenges us. This year is the Japanese Beetle attacking the fruit before it ripens. We have always had issues of these pests moving in but this year is the worst yet. We are building traps to help control them, but meanwhile we are picking our peaches before they destroy them. Oh, there is always some kind of a challenge!

Tomatoes

Beans or carrots

Peaches

Figs

Basil

Cherry tomatoes

Zucchini and summer squash

Tomatillos

Also! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!! We need baskets returned. For our Fall Shares we absolutely will no longer allow any baskets to leave the farm. If you forget to bring a basket we do have boxes in the old Chevy pickup you are welcome to use instead. We have purchased over 25 NEW baskets this year alone and still find ourselves scrambling each week to find something to put the produce in. Thanks so much for you help!

Ya, we are celebrating the heat with a mix of HOT peppers! Time for making some salsa!

We have a lot going on here. Tory, our senior doe goat is due today, the pumpkin and winter squash patch is in full swing, weeds and all. The corn for fall shares is lookin’ pretty darn good. This week we have a extra odds and ends. A little this, a little that. When you come into the cool room you see a couple baskets with some mixed produce. Squash, eggplant, Chinese noodle beans and some fruit bags. Choose two items to add to your share.

Week Eight – Last for Spring Shares

Can you believe this is the last week of spring shares? Don’t forget we are skipping a week next week before summer shares begin June 7th.

This weeks basket includes:

Shallots

Green onions

Mustard greens

Salad Blend

Rainbow carrots (washed, peeled and sliced)

Cherries

Mixed herb bag

And, one of either a fennel bulb, artichokes or kohlrabi (unfortunately we didn’t have enough of each for everyone to have so we mixed it up).

Thank you all for your support!

See ya in a couple weeks!

Peas, Broccoli, Garlic and Strawberries!

This week the gardens are going through some major transitions. Several of our early spring crops like spinach, arugula and lettuce are bolting with the heat. Out they go and in with the new! Change is welcome, but tender greens will be missed as the weeks go by. Broccoli will be ready this week as well as the shelling peas, garlic and strawberries. Yay! The first of the fruit! The cherries are just starting to get the slightest of color change. With any luck, they will be in spring Shares.

A quick note~ we are looking for some old fashioned wood frame windows with the glass. If anyone has some floating around and want to trade for some extra produce, we’d love to make a deal! We are looking to build a protected area for our transplants with them.

2018 Shares Now Available

We are so excited to begin the growing season once again!  Shares for 2018 are now available.  This year we have some new and exciting things happening around the shop and garden.  We are increasing our growing as well as new organic food opportunities.  One of our new things this year is our weekly artisan bread share.  We will be offering more artisan cheeses, kombucha and more!  We will keep you updated!

All shares will be picked up at our shop, Ali’s Organics & Garden Supply.  We will be changing our time to make it a little easier for pick up by increasing the time by a few hours.  New pick up hours will be from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm.

We also would like our share holders to be sure to bring a basket this season to pick up their shares.  This way we don’t have to hound you for our baskets back!  We will be using wooden boxes, as we can stack them in our new “up and coming” cooling room this year.

Some things to look forward to this year in your shares.  This year our asparagus patches will be able to be picked for a longer season of at least three weeks rather than the one week.  There is nothing better than fresh cut asparagus!  Our strawberry patches have grown and we should have a larger abundance as well.  Possible ramps this year.  We have been waiting patiently for our patch to be harvested for three years now and this just might be our lucky year!

Last fall we included a recipe every week using produce that was in your share.  We thought this might help those that wasn’t to sure what to do with some of your produce.  This did take extra time and love, so PLEASE, if you loved it, give us feed back on weather you would like us to do it or not!

Now, get signed up on the shares tab (or click link below) and we will see this spring for the best season ever!  Thank you!
